This past year presented so many different challenges and obstacles that tested our strength and resiliency. During this global pandemic, the major changes to the ways we live our lives have impacted our children and their relationships. For example, Parenting Education Programs’ staff has noticed that the pandemic has caused many families to experience higher levels of stress and anxiety than ever before.
May is Mental Health Month and now more than ever, we need to combat the stigma surrounding mental health concerns. As the world recovers from a global pandemic, now is the time to ensure that every LGBTQ+ American has access to quality, affordable healthcare without fear of harassment and discrimination.
Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act made it illegal for healthcare providers to discriminate based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.
“Sex” here includes sexual orientation, gender identity and pregnancy. That means doctors would not be allowed to turn away LGBTQ+ patients or deny them healthcare simply because of who they are.
But the Trump Administration tried to roll back these critical protections, claiming that “sex” simply refers to one’s sex assigned at birth. If allowed to take effect, this rule would have granted permission for insurers, doctors and other healthcare providers to deny service to members of our community.
